Background

Adding value

Tygerberg Association for Persons with Physical Disabilities is a registered private welfare organization.  It was established in 1962 after a need arose for employment opportunities for persons with physical disabilities.

The Association renders services to persons with physical disabilities between the age of 0 – 60 years in the Oostenberg and Tygerberg Municipal Areas.

A management committee consisting of volunteers from different areas manages the Association.

The staff consists of:

  • Three social workers
  • Administrative officer
  • Assistant administrative officer/fundraiser
  • Workshop manager
  • Motor vehicle driver

Persons with physical disabilities require assistance to improve their quality of life, in most cases in situations of poverty.

The challenge of addressing poverty through social work services lies beyond the level of the provision of handouts of basic assistance.

Capacity enhancement and the development of the individual person’s ability to overcome his/her needs without the presence of a fulltime social work practitioner, is the goal at the heart of the service that the Association provides.

The Association’s core business would be developmental social work services, incorporating person centered assessment, care management and community-based services.

It is an empowering approach to helping people plan their own future and organize the support and services they need.

TYGERBERG APD SPORTS DAY 04/09/2009

In celebration of Casual Day on 04/09/2009, the student social workers of Tygerberg APD hosted a sports day for children with disabilities at the Belhar Indoor Sport Centre.

Through the project the students aimed to:

  • Promote the interests of all persons with disabilities;  and
  • Encourage a greater concern, understanding and awareness amongst the general population of the disabled and difficulties of persons with disabilities.

A hundred learners from three LSEN Schools (Alta du Toit School, Astra School and Oasis School) and one mainstream school (De Kuilen High School) participated along side each other in different activities.

There was great excitement amongst the learners when we introduced our guests:

  • Hilton Langenhoven
  • Roxy Burns
  • Fanie van der Merwe
  • Craig Moorgas

(ALL PARALYMPIC ATHLETES!!)

Craig Moorgas, wheelchair basketball player in the Sydney 2000 Paralympic team spoke to the learners about living with a disability.

Every participant enjoyed a light lunch of a sandwich, fruit and juice.

Every learner was presented with a medal and certificate of attendance.

Each school was presented with a floating trophy in recognition of their support and participation.

All the learners enjoyed the day and the teachers are of opinion that the sports day is a fun way to create awareness about disabilities among the non-disabled learners.  They would like the sports day to be an annual event on Tygerberg APD’s calendar.

This day would not have been possible without the generous financial contributions and donations in kind from the following persons and companies:
